Massive Change

Media: book and exhibition
Who: Canadian designer Bruce Mau and his institute
When: Toronto exhibition 2005
What: Exploring notions of development through design. Philosophy of the exhibition and book is entirely founded upon the values of modernism and capitalism. Emphasis on "global communities", sustainability and technological progress. De-emphasis on economics, ethics and naturally sustainable resources.

Zygmunt Bauman

Media: books (Globalization: the Human Consequences, Wasted Lives: Modernity and its Outcasts)
Who: Polish sociologist
When: 1925 - present
What: Bauman theorizes about social changes resultant of modernity, postmodernity and globalization. Although his theories are not entirely original, his books are thouroughly accessible and his writing direct, integrating social, economic and political perspectives in a unique and encompassing manner.
Key Concepts:
----- liquid modernity > the shift within society and economics towards fluidity and flexibility. Bauman asserts that contemporary times have eroded our sense of committment, a loss that not only affects us economically (loss of job security), but also our relationships and our worldviews.
----- waste management > Bauman focuses on the social outcasts of globalization, those who are left behind to sustain the system of modernity/development.
----- individualism and consumerism

Black Rain

Media: VHS (avail on DVD)
Who: directed by Shohei Imamura, new wave auteur
When: 1989
What: Adapted from the novel by Masuji Ibuse, this haunting, subtle, black and white film details the lives of a family of survivors of the Hiroshima bombing. Trapped in an almost limbo state between health and death, normality and tragedy, the family members all live with the constant threat of a late onset of radiation sickness. Unlike Imamura's other films, Black Rain is very accessible.

Shanghai

Media: book, novel
Who: Yokomitsu Riichi
What: Follow the lives of various Japanese expats through semi-colonial Shanghai during the 20s where the boundaries of nationality, gender and class are simultaneously reinforced, questioned and subverted. Written in a highly externalized style, the text is peppered with great, pithy quotes that epitomize the capitalist system and ideologies of development.
Quotes:
"If having a conscience was such a big deal, then Shanghai would be full of unproductive people doing nothing."
"... because he was in Shanghai, the space his body took up was always a territory of Japan."
"Was this a factory for the sake of production or the sake of consumption?"
