Media: VHS (avail on DVD)
Who: directed by Shohei Imamura, new wave auteur
When: 1989
What: Adapted from the novel by Masuji Ibuse, this haunting, subtle, black and white film details the lives of a family of survivors of the Hiroshima bombing. Trapped in an almost limbo state between health and death, normality and tragedy, the family members all live with the constant threat of a late onset of radiation sickness. Unlike Imamura's other films, Black Rain is very accessible.
